Leurs discours motivent des engagements caritatifs et propagandistes ; ils affirment que la guerre est juste, sainte et divine ; ils fondent une théologie en acte qui fait du champ de bataille un Golgotha et du soldat mourant un nouveau Christ. Cela révèle l’extension de la guerre totale qui s’imprègne de toutes les forces vives, y compris religieuses.

Patriotism and theology : the religious factor in World War I

In 1914-1918, there is a convergence between faith in God and faith in fatherland. How does theology at the time justify this patriotico-religious representation ? At the same time, Christians continue to promote peace and to defend the universality of the Church. This leads to a convergence of a theology of patriotic inspiration and a patriotism justified by a theology seeking to go beyond these contradictions. Their premises motivate commitments that are both charitable and propagandistic ; they affirm that the war is just, holy and divine ; they found a theology in act that makes the field of battle into a Golgotha and the dying soldier into a new Christ. This reveals the extension of total war that permeates all life forces, including the religious ones.
