Nature et loi naturelle comme concepts théologiques

Dans le cadre de ce dossier, la rédaction a souhaité voir élucidé le rôle et le sens du concept de nature en théologie morale catholique. Car il importe de déjouer les malentendus qui peuvent naître du fait que, d’un côté, de nouveaux et très ambigus naturalismes font aujourd’hui retour dans la culture contemporaine, tandis que, d’un autre côté avec le pontificat de Benoît XVI, la loi naturelle est remise à l’honneur. Cette conjonction peut nourrir bien des amalgames et tentatives de récupération. Pour les déjouer, il importe de prendre la mesure de l’élaboration spécifiquement théologique dont le concept de nature a fait l’objet dans la tradition catholique, puis de comprendre l’originalité de cet enseignement « canonique » que représente la scolastique pour une compréhension de la téléologie de la nature pour l’éthique. Á partir de là, quelques conclusions peuvent être tirées sur ce qu’un tel positionnement assigne encore aujourd’hui au moraliste.

Nature and natural law as theological concepts

Within the framework of this overall study, the editorial board wanted to have the role and meaning of the concept of nature in Catholic moral theology elucidated, because it is important to clear up the misunderstandings that can arise from the fact that, on the one hand, new and highly ambiguous naturalisms are today emerging in contemporary culture, while, on the other, Benedict XVI’s pontificate has brought natural law back into the limelight. This concurrence can underwrite considerable confusion and attempts at reappropriation. In order to foil these attempts, it is paramount to analyze the specifically theological elaboration dedicated to the concept of nature in Catholic tradition and then to understand the originality of this “canonical” teaching as represented by scholasticism in order to come to an understanding of how the teleology of nature bears on ethics. On the basis of this approach, we shall see which conclusions may be drawn about the goals that such a position assigns to a moralist today.
