L’Enfer est-il éternel ?

Commençant par rappeler les objections traditionnelles ou habituelles à l’Enfer de la part des meilleurs croyants (l’amour de Dieu, l’angoisse provo­quée, conceptions d’un Dieu sadique. ), l’auteur évoque d’abord les raisons qui militent en faveur de l’Enfer, notamment dans les propos même de Jésus : opposition entre le bien et le mal, intransigeance à l’égard du mal, langage pédagogique des paraboles, propos qui paraissent surtout contradictoires. Une aporie surgissant de l’enseignement même de jésus, l’auteur examine quelques théories pour en sortir (« l’enfer chirurgical » de J. Elluin, le « espérer pour tous » de H. Urs von Balthasar) pour examiner ensuite les implications de la liberté créée et de ses risques, et de l’incertitude comme statut existentiel. Pour finir, il se concentre sur « l’enfer des démons », celui de ces anges déchus qui, hors de l’humanité, auraient librement choisi la damnation, ce qui ne contraint pas la théologie à des certitudes définitives, mais plutôt à la modestie.

Is Hell eternal ?

The author begins by recalling the traditional or habitual o1~ections to Hell by some of the strongest believers (Gods love, the anguish caused, conceptions of a sadistic God, etc.). He then gives the reasons that militate in favor of Hell, notably in the very remarks of Jesus : opposition between good and evil, intransigence towards evil, the pedagogical language of the parables, and remarks that appeared especially contradictory. The author examines some theories to overcome the aporie that arises from, the very teaching ofjesus «< the surgical hell » of J. Elluin, the « hope for everyone » of H. Urs von Balthasar) in order to then examine the implications of matedfreedom and its risks, and of uncertainty as an existential status. Finally, he concentrates on « the hell of demons », that of those fallen angels, who, beyond humanity, would have freely chosen damnation. This does not limit theology to definitive certitudes, but to a certain modesty.
