Puisque l’Église est sacrement universel du salut, la vision conciliaire est doublement interrogée sur cette prétention à pouvoir désigner la vocation du monde et l’unité du genre humain ainsi que sur la pertinence de l’Église en tant qu’institution de salut. Que signifie ce salut dans une société qui s’est émancipée des contraintes de la question du sens ? Quelle nécessité d’une forme de vie ecclésiale de la foi, celle d’une Église ? Quel statut des non chrétiens au regard de l’offre du salut de Dieu à tous ? Cette triple problématique découle d’un ample état des lieux posé à partir de la question centrale : le christianisme survivra-t-il à la modernité ? Partant de l’origine du christianisme, tissée de diversité, la théologie doit continuer à chercher, notamment à partir des formes que revêt la communion, la manière dont le Règne de Dieu vient à travers l’Église. C’est tout l’enjeu de sa crédibilité et de la pertinence du christianisme en post-modernité.

Since the Church is the universal sacrament of salvation, the conciliary vision is called into question, doubly, about this claim to define the calling of the world and the unity of the human species, as well as about the pertinence of the Church as an institution of salvation. What does salvation mean in a society that has freed itself from the constraints of the question of meaning ? What necessity would there be in any form of ecclesial life of faith, that of the Church ? What would the status of non-Christians be in relation to the offer of salvation from God to all ? This triple problematic proceeds from an analysis of the present situation on the basis of the central question : will Christianity survive modernity ? Starting from theorigins of Christianity, woven of diverse threads, theology must continue to seek out, especially in the forms involving communion, the way in which the Kingdom of God is mediated by the Church. This sums up the stakes involved in the Church’s credibility and the pertinence of Christianity in post-modernity.
