Note sur l’iconographie du Prologue de Jean

Le Prologue a engendré une production iconographique importante, qui est la traduction visuelle de la théologie johannique. On en donnne ici une illustration, tirée d’un évangéliaire byzantin du xie ou xiie siècle (le Paris gr. 64), et on étudie quelles exégèses picturales elle propose du Verbe qui était « au commencement auprès de Dieu ». Le problème d’interprétation ainsi posé est significatif de la complexité des rapports entre « pensée discursive » et « pensée figurative ».

Note on the Iconography of the Prologue

The Prologue gave birth to an important iconographic production that is a visual translation of Johannine theology. The illustration here is taken from a Byzantine evangeliarium of the 11th or 12th century (the Paris Gr. 64). A study is made of what pictorial exegeses it proposes of the Word who was “from the beginning with God”. The problem of interpretation asked here is significant of the complexity of the connections between “discursive thought” and “figurative thought”.
