Le procès d’Eckhart a quelque chose d’unique dans l’histoire de la pensée. Qu’un maître en théologie, professeur extraordinaire à l’Université de Paris, dominicain de surcroît et, en outre, numéro deux de son Ordre, ait été suspecté et ait fait l’objet d’un procès, sur la demande d’autres dominicains, est une première. Si ce procès a été intenté contre Eckhart, c’est pour une part en raison de l’expérience mystique qu’il a eue très jeune et qui l’a amené à préconiser une réforme en profondeur, à repenser les catégories de son époque, à opter pour le paradoxe et pour le langage des mystiques, à être en avance sur son temps et, finalement, à ne pas être compris.

Eckhart’s trial is something unique in the history of thought. It was a first that a master of theology, extraordinary professor at the University of Paris, on top of this a Dominican and, what is more, number two in his order, was suspected and the object of a trial, at the request of other Dominicans. If this trial ever came to pass, it is partially because of Eckhart’s mystic experience when he was quite young and which led him to plead for a deep-reaching reform, even to rethink the categories of his period, to opt for paradox and the language of mystics, to be ahead of his time and, finally, to be misunderstood.
