Structures typologiques de l’histoire d’après les Histoires de Grégoire de Tours. Prophéties-Accomplissement-Renouvellement

C’est pendant toute sa vie d’évêque que Grégoire a rédigé ses Histoires dont l’aventure éditoriale posthume fut complexe. Si elles présentent une forte part hagiographique, elles ne donnent pas moins une importante information à propos des Mérovingiens notamment. Cependant, une telle information ne doit pas faire oublier les ambitieux desseins théologiques et exégétiques de l’auteur. Ainsi le Christ se révèle-t-il dans cette oeuvre comme fondement et finalité des structures typologiques, et l’Eglise comme effet du Christ dans l’histoire. Ainsi n’y a-t-il rien d’étonnant à ce que, dans le contexte de ce vocabulaire typologique employé dans les Histoires, le résultat le plus étonnant ait d’abord été la forte présence des « Prophètes », leur rôle s’étant révélé essentiel pour présenter un Christ maître de toute l’histoire et confirmant l’accomplissement des prophéties.

Typological Structures of History according to Gregory of Tours

It was during his whole life as a bishop that Gregory composed his Histories, of which the posthumous editorial adventure was complex. If they present a strong hagiographic portion, they also give important information, especially about the Merovingians. Such information, nevertheless, should not make us forget the author’s ambitious theological and exegetical project. Thus Christ reveals himself in this work as the foundation and finality of typological structures, and the Church as an effect of Christ in history. We should not be surprised, therefore, that, in the context of this typological vocabulary used in the Histories, the most surprising result had first been the strong presence of the “Prophets.” Their role was reveled as essential for presenting Christ as master of all history and confirmed what the prophecies accomplished.
