Corpus mysticum revisité

Corpus mysticum demeure l’un des principaux ouvrages de Henri de Lubac. À la relecture, il apparaît que son but principal – restaurer la dimension ecclésiale de l’eucharistie – est inséparable d’une réflexion sur la sacramentalité. En même temps que l’adjectif «mystique» en venait à qualifier l’Église plutôt que l’eucharistie, son sens s’affaiblissait. Dans la réflexion et la piété eucharistiques, on tendait à dissocier, sinon à opposer, « réalité » et « symbole », à dévaluer le registre du symbolique/sacramentel au profit de la « vérité ». Que les inflexions remontent au IXe ou au XIe siècle, une perte en venait à affecter la compréhension du mystère eucharistique, les questions se posant de savoir dans quelle mesure la théologie ultérieure devait s’en trouver affectée. L’ouvrage érudit du théologien jésuite avait donc une dimension militante, qui ne pouvait qu’affecter sa réception, mais devait se révéler à plus long terme riche de ressources.

The Corpus mysticum remains one of Henri de Lubac’s main works. Upon rereading it, one might find that its main objective – restoring the ecclesial dimension of the eucharist – is inseparable from thinking about sacramentality. At the same time as the adjective « mystical » came to be applied to the Church rather than the eucharist, its meaning was diminished. In thinking and in eurcharistic piety, one tended to dissociate, if not outright oppose, “reality” and“symbol”, to devalue the symbolic/sacramental register in favour of the « truth ». Whether this thinking goes back to the 9th or the 11th centuries, this loss influenced understanding of the eucharistic mystery, entailing the questions of how much this would affect subsequent theology. Thus, the Jesuit theologian’s work had a militant dimension which could not but affect the way it was received, but has revealed itself to be very rich in inspiration over the longer term.
